In 2011, Thailand faced one of the most devastating floods in its history. The unprecedented water levels and prolonged inundation brought immense loss of lives, property, and memories. The campus of AIT was among the hardest-hit areas.
To commemorate this event and preserve its lessons, a memorial landscape was designed. The roofline was set to the height of the floodwaters, its freeform silhouette evoking the motion of waves. A reflective material was chosen to mirror the ground below, where porous blocks were arranged in irregular patterns symbolizing the debris and remnants that once drifted across the floodwaters. At the heart of the space, a dead tree preserved from the disaster was placed as a poignant reminder of the losses endured.
This design transcends its physical form; it is a symbol of awareness and reflection. It serves as a reminder that natural disasters will only grow more severe if humanity continues to live without regard for the planet. The memorial is thus a call to rethink our values, behaviors, and way of life-towards a more conscious and sustainable future.
